I recently came by this great site by McCann-Erickson Japan about simple things you can do to be eco minded in your day to day life.

What really strikes me is the use of 3-D and fluid camera movements. This is a very fun yet educational web app.

enjoy.

Who is Generation Y?
Wednesday June 4, 2008 by Jon C

AdAge’s, Kenneth Gronbach, recently characterized Gen Y as “anyone born from 1985 to the present … More than 90 million strong, they’ve surpassed boomers in size. They are consuming at 500% of the rate of their boomer parents in adjusted dollars, age for age, when you take into account their unprecedented influence on family purchases.”

BrandNoise recently countered Gronbach, stating: “Generations are shaped by economic and cultural forces that unify us in fundamental ways. The code of each generation is shaped by that zeitgeist—the glue. A span of over 20 years is simply too long to sustain a unifying code.”

BrandNoise then goes on to say that Gen Y ends in 2001 as a result of 9/11 and that the post 9/11 generation is being “shaped by forces like political and cultural anxiety.” A point I very much agree with.

Here's one for the top shelf

Being an admirer of all things typographic a book called “1000 Type Treatments” caught my eye in the book shop the other day. It’s an inspirational collection of work by an international ensemble of graphic designers and typographers. The work is artfully photographed in a way that gets you close to the fine details of the layouts. You’ll find a useful directory of fonts and paper/materials used in the work shown along with a list of the designers behind the work so you can dig a little deeper, that is if you’re not too busy turning green with envy.

Strong, sincere, honest, dependable research from the University of Michigan and Harvard has found that consumers tend not to associate brands with human personality characteristics. Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the study concludes that most respond to brands like the two-dimensional products or services that they are.

Brand “mascots” are a noteworthy exception, causing people to respond along more human lines.

Mock Schnell

Ugoff
Remember Ugoff? He was the character CP+B rolled out when they wanted to promote grilled chicken salads for Burger King. But there was a problem with Ugoff. He was little more than a cross between Ben Stiller’s character, Derek Zoolander, and, Dieter, from Mike Meyers’ popular SNL skit, Sprockets. But, hey, at least they borrowed from good sources.

Fast-forward three years.

Vdub
Now we have Wolfgang, the latest Crispin incarnation and spokesman for the Volkswagen GTI. He’s got the same Dieter-inspired fashions as Ugoff, along with a similar female sidekick. Only now he’s got an over-the-top hip-hop vibe to go with along with it.

Fair enough. After all, spoofing rap artists is fresh creative terrain, right? Well, not if you ask Jamie Kennedy, Seth Green, or even the Beastie Boys before they began taking themselves seriously.

Ali G
Which brings us, finally, to Ali G, who came along and spoofed hip-hop for all it was worth on the BBC, HBO, and even his movie: “Ali G Indahouse.”

But nevermind all that. Just put the above ingredients into the CP+B cultural reference blender, and what do we get? Wolfgang and a not-so-trademark shoutout: “German engineering in da haus.”

Word.

Be smarter at work, slack off!
Wednesday March 22, 2006 by HM Staff

Archimedes hard at work.A great article with insight on the art of slacking. One day, I hope to get to the point where guilt and fear of un-employment don’t cloud my judgement in this VERY important facet of working culture. Oddly enough, I’d write more, but…..

The World's Fastest Indian.
Wednesday March 15, 2006 by HM Staff

Ever thought of going 180mph on a slightly modified vintage bike designed to go 55mph? I know I rarely think of anything else. This movie is a sparse excerpt of Burt Munro’s quest to do just that, with his 1920 Indian Scout. Check out the trailer here.

Below are some links related to the REAL story of the
legendary Kiwi, Burt Munro.
